- Strong physical bulk. 92 base HP with base 105 Defense is great physical bulk for a Pokemon with an offensive movepool.
- Good base Special Attack. For a Pokemon with pretty good bulk, 110 base Special Attack is not as modest as it seems.
- Shell Armor makes it consistent. Complimenting its nice bulk and access to Iron Defense, Shell Armor eliminates critical hit RNG.
- Strong typing. Fire and Dragon are a really strong defensive typing combination and an extremely potent offensively neutral STAB combination.

- Slow without Swift Swim. 68 is really low but at least allows it to outspeed some bulky wallbreakers and sweepers with minor investment.
- Less than subpar special bulk. While base 92 HP is solid, base 60 SpD is highly lacking.
- Good physical movepool but lacking base Attack. Salamarine has a pretty strong physical movepool that it cannot make much use of due to its mediocre unboosted 75 base Attack. However, it does get access to the powerful Dragon Dance but only brings it up from lacking to mediocre.
- Good base Special Attack but lacking special movepool. 110 Special Attack on a bulky Pokemon is solid… When you have moves to use. It is essentially restricted to four options (five if you really want to use Snarl in Singles, but it is solid in Doubles. Especially with Throat Spray).
- Swift Swim and Sniper are nice but niche. While good on some Pokemon, these abilities are not particularly impressive on Salamarine as rain weakens one of its STABs and the other doesn't combo well with its learnset.
