Move 1: Dragon Dance |
Item: Life Orb / Leftovers |
Primordial Tyrantrum is a potent physical sweeper that can achieve surprising speed after a single Dragon Dance. Leftovers extend its longevity on the field, while Life Orb boosts its offensive presence, making it easier to secure a sweep. The move selection provides excellent coverage across the roster, all while leaving space for Dragon Dance.
With Jolly nature and 252 Speed EVs, Tyrantrum at +1 outspeeds +Speed nature Cinderace, Iron Valiant, and Serperior. Alternatively, an Adamant nature with 252 Speed EVs at +1 can outspeed Jolly Garchomp with 252 Speed. Sticky Web support can help Tyrantrum handle faster threats, with Choice Scarf users being the only major concern.
Tyrantrum struggles against Unaware Clefable and Dondozo, and it’s unable to set up safely against Fairy-types. Iron Head can be used to deal with Clefable, while Thunder Fang can help against Dondozo. Fast taunters can disrupt Dragon Dance, though many taunters in the meta lack bulk, making them vulnerable to Tyrantrum’s power. Encore can also foil its strategy by forcing repeated Dragon Dance uses, giving the opponent a free switch.
Tyrantrum benefits from utility and bulky pivots that can help set it up for a sweep, such as Ferrothorn, Toxapex, and Rotom-Wash. Hazard setters like Glimmora, Samurott-H, Chansey, and Gliscor can bring opponents into OHKO range, while wallbreakers or status spreaders that threaten Dondozo and Clefable—such as Dragapult, Gholdengo, Ogerpon-Wellspring, Mawile-Mega, and Scizor-Mega—make excellent partners.
Move 1: Close Combat / Fire Fang |
Item: Choice Band / Life Orb |
Primordial Tyrantrum serves as a powerful bulky offensive pivot with excellent coverage options. The combination of Close Combat, Crunch, Ice Fang, and Earthquake lets it threaten most of the metagame with super-effective hits. Swapping Ice Fang for Thunder Fang allows it to 2HKO many of OU's walls, such as Corviknight and Alomomola, that would otherwise take neutral damage.
A Jolly nature with 188 Speed EVs enables Tyrantrum to outspeed and OHKO Mega Scizor with a 180 Speed neutral set using Strong Jaw-boosted Fire Fang. On the other hand, an Adamant nature with 144 Speed EVs lets it outspeed and OHKO Ursaluna with 252 Speed EVs and a neutral nature using Close Combat. Crunch provides a reliable STAB option, reaching an effective 180 power after Strong Jaw and STAB boosts.
Choice Band increases Tyrantrum’s offensive pressure but locks it into a single move, while Life Orb offers more flexibility at the cost of slightly reduced damage. In most situations, Crunch is your safest option for consistent damage.
Tyrantrum struggles against fast sweepers that can exploit its type weaknesses, such as Mienshao, Urshifu, and Weavile. It also faces difficulty against strong First Impression users like Golisopod, Lokix, and Slither Wing, who can easily force it off the field.
Tyrantrum appreciates Ghost- and Steel-types as reliable switch-ins to its threats. Pokémon like Gholdengo, Aegislash, Corviknight, and Ferrothorn resist many of Tyrantrum's weaknesses and can help wall opposing defensive Pokémon, including Corviknight and Ferrothorn. Hazard setters are also valuable partners, as they bring enemies closer to KO range. Sticky Web is especially useful, allowing Tyrantrum to deal with non-scarf fast sweepers more effectively. Additionally, special wallbreakers and sweepers like Gardevoir-Mega, Diancie-Mega, and Volcarona help deal with physically bulky threats or Intimidate users that can hinder Tyrantrum’s offensive power.
