- Great mixed bulk. 111/81/92 is really strong, allowing it to naturally survive 2HKOs from most neutral attacks.
- Good offensive typing. Ice and Fairy STAB, while not the best super effective coverage STAB, it is highly effective neutrally across the board.
- Amazing offensive coverage. It has access to highly regarded BoltBeam coverage and the complimentary Ground coverage to its Ice STAB through Thunderbolt and Earth Power access.
- Useful abilities. Refrigerate provides a more powerful Ice type move than Ice beam that is more accurate than Blizzard by turning Hyper Voice into a 108 power Ice STAB. Alternatively, Dazzling helps it block Accelerock, Fake Out, Prankster, and crippling Bullet Punches.
- STAB Draining Kiss. While lacking standard recovery moves, STAB Draining Kiss is one of the best offensive healing moves in the game when it is a STAB, enabling it as a potent Calm Mind sweeper.

- Subpar defensive typing. Its defensive typing grants it 3 resistances and an immunity at the cost of 4 weaknesses, one of them a crippling 4x Steel weakness.
- Very slow yet somehow not slow enough. 51 is terribly slow. As a bulky offensive Pokemon, this isn't the worst disadvantage in the world, especially when supported by Trick Room. However, it is still naturally faster than some of its threats and important Pokémon it checks so they end up going before it in Trick Room, such as Ursaluna, Ferrothorn, and Kingambit.
- Metagame context. With its crippling 4x weakness to Steel and additonal weakness to Fire, it has a difficult time finding footing in National Dex OU and UU due to the concentration of Steel and Fire types in those tiers, notable threats including Gholdengo, Scizor-Mega, Mawile-Mega, Charizard-Mega-Y. Had the metagame of those standard formats not been revolved around Pokémon it is crippled by, perhaps Aurorus would have a valuable spot with its set of tools.
