- Incredibly fast. 130 base Speed is spectacular, allowing it to outspeed a lot of Pokémon naturally, even without any investment.
- Two great abilities. Aerilate is phenomenal for damage as you gain STAB on (formerly) Normal type moves in addition to a 1.3x power boost. Gale Wings is great to guarantee a Tailwind goes off through priority (unless hit by Fake Out).
- Good special bulk. Although hampered by a 65 base HP, 110 base SpD is excellent for a Pokémon that is focused on either offense or utility.
- Many great utility moves complimented by its speed. Griffeon has many utility moves, including Tailwind, Helping Hand, and Heal Bell. These are complimented well by its Speed as it will almost always get them off unless under the effects of Trick Room.
- Flying is a good monotyping. Immunity to ground type with 3 resistances and weaknesses is pretty solid. Although lacking a second offensive STAB, Flying, by itself, is still pretty effective as an offensive neutral typing.

- Physically frail. Low HP combined with a low Def makes Griffeon blow up like a balloon to physical attacks.
- Mediocre base Attack. 95 base Attack isn't bad but it isn't breaking records. Luckily, Aerilate helps to patch this up by increasing the power of its STAB pool.
- Lacking an offensive movepool. Griffeon lacks good physical moves that lean towards its physical-focused stat line. On top of that, Griffeon lacks good non-STAB physical coverage.
- No recovery. One of Griffeon's best moves in its non-Aerilate sets is Brave Bird but it is a powerful recoil move while Griffeon lacks recovery. Makes Gale Wings sets have to either cope with special Griffeon sets or have a competitive itemslot for a form of recovery or Heavy-Duty Boots.
