- Defensive typing with Sap Sipper. Sap Sipper allows Alpioca to be a good switch-in into strong Grass types like Rillaboom while being a Water type. This ability further improves Alpioca's defensive typing, making it weak to only two types (Electric and Fighting) while resistant to four and immune to two.
- Gooey. Gooey is a good ability to enable Alpioca's partners to revenge kill a physical sweeper.
- Strong bulk. Alpioca has impressive bulk, sitting at a healthy 120/70/100. This roughly makes it around the same base bulkiness as Clodsire.
- Good coverage. Alpioca has an impressive variety of medium-high power coverage moves.
- Recovery. Alpioca has access to Recover to extend its longevity.
- Cleric moves. Alpioca has access to Aromatherapy and Life Dew (for Doubles) to assist in team preservation.

- Pretty slow. Alpioca sits at a quite slow 62 base Speed which allows it to outspeed some common walls and bulky offensive Pokemon but get outsped by pretty much everything else.
- Mediocre offense. With an base Attack of 40, physical hits are tickle damage and should be avoided unless used for a secondary effect. Its base Special Attack is at a more admirable 93 but is still pretty unthreatening. High base power moves should be considered for attacking move slots to compensate for a lower offensive stat.
- Competition. Alpioca has to compete with several strong defensive Water types. Most notably, Alomomola in singles is (arguably) a better cleric with one of the beefiest Wish Passes in National Dex, Toxapex who is a much bulkier wall and immune to Toxic, and Rotom-Wash who acts as a more useful pivot.
- No good status affliction. Alpioca lacks a good status to spread, which most of its competition has some access to.
